Organising the Laundry

Gioia Decluttering News

You may be thinking, as I often do, ‘Yikes I have no space in my laundry for anything except the washing machine’. Or you may be one of those very fortunate people who have a lovely spacious laundry room complete with shelves, cupboards and a folding table. I don’t know anybody that lucky, but I’m sure they’re out there.

The main thing in a laundry is to have adequate shelving and storage. If your laundry room doesn’t have any built in cupboards, then shelves or a free-standing metal shelving rack will work equally as well and will store a variety of items: [Read more…]

What do you do with your parents’ belongings when they pass on…

Gioia Decluttering News

This is a tough one for most of us. I’ve spoken to many people in the close to 7 years since I began my decluttering business who have stacks of sealed boxes of their parents’ belongings; they struggle with storage in their home, and often with being able to let go of Mum and Dad’s things.

Let me tell you how it was for me and my family when we had to make these difficult decisions. Perhaps it was a little easier for us because when it came time to pack up their house our Mum had already been in care for over two years with advanced Alzheimer’s. When the time came that Dad also needed full time care and had to move out of their home it was crunch time. We had to clear out a house that our parents had lived in for over 35 years. In the end we kept very little, it boiled down to just keeping what was precious to us. Everything else we gave away to charity. [Read more…]

Decluttering an entire home in 2 days!

Gioia Decluttering News

It’s not often I get to do a complete home makeover in such a condensed period, however when Summer, a busy mum with three small children, won the Little Treasurers competition we had a limited time frame in which to complete the project. In those two days Summer and I decluttered and reorganised every room in her three bedroom house, and every cupboard, wardrobe and even the pantry. Summer was a delight to work with, and we both enjoyed the challenge. I’ve copied her blog post below, where she describes our process of working together, and her emotions leading up to the project and why she wanted to do it.

At the beginning of March I entered a competition.

I waited until the last day before entries closed to send it in. I wasn’t really sure if I wanted to enter…but I knew I NEEDED to win! The “Messy House” competition was being run by Little Treasures magazine…and the prize was just what I needed…the services of a professional declutterer!

Sorting the Paper in Your Home Office

Gioia Decluttering News

Our home office can be a blessing and a curse. This is because items which should remain in the office often spill over into various other rooms in the house, and the office itself can quickly become inundated with a collection of unrelated items, such as kids’ toys which end up on the desk, and lots of miscellaneous items which scatter the floor.

But when it’s organised and decluttered, then it becomes a blessing, somewhere you can quietly focus on your work, or household accounts, and a place for everything and everything in its place. Okay, so this is the ideal and it may not always look beautifully organised, but when systems are in place it’s a great deal easier to put everything away at the end of the day. [Read more…]
